Joins insulated electric power cables installed in underground conduits and trenches and prepares cable terminations for connection to electrical equipment and overhead lines.

Installs and maintains equipment associated with electrical supply such as transformers; attends to electrical breakdown and emergencies; conducts routine maintenance on the aerial and underground electricity supply networks; prepares low and high voltage cable joints and cable terminations, while connecting and installing electrical equipment and overhead lines; uses heavy plant equipment such as elevated work platforms and portable equipment such as hydraulic drills; may undertake substation installation and maintenance, and specialised testing and revenue metre installation.

• Works predominantly outdoors to join high voltage and other electrical and telephone cables, but may also work indoors in power stations or in substations.
• Works in all weather conditions and may be on call 24 hours per day.
• Works in confined spaces, in trenches or at height.
• Frequently works in dirty and damp conditions and needs to observe stringent safety procedures when working with live electrical cables.
• Wears protective and insulating clothing (e.g. rubber gloves and boots).

• Medium physical work.
• Stands frequently when carrying out most work and may climb ladders and poles to effect repairs.
• Occasionally walks about work area to move equipment and materials.
• Sitting is not required.
• Frequently climbs and works from ladders, cradles and other rigged equipment.
• Stretches up and across occasionally.
• Frequently squats, crouches, bends or kneels to carry out jointing tasks.
• Frequently twists body or neck when carrying out tasks.
• Constantly works with electrical cabling and jointing materials. Frequent repetitive hand and arm movements are required.
• Frequently lifts and carries equipment, jointing materials and other tools.
• Driving is required to travel to work sites.
• Uses a range of hand and power equipment to carry out work tasks.
• Mental skills necessary include practical and technical skills.

To work as a cable jointer a National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Cable Jointer) Level 3 for low voltage cable jointing is required (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). A Level 4 certificate is needed for high voltage cable jointing and Level 5 certificate for specialist cable jointing.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
