Repairs electrical appliances, mostly domestic, in workshop or place of use.

Diagnoses faults and dismantles appliance to the necessary degree; replaces or repairs defective parts and wiring; reassembles and tests appliance.

• Works indoors, either in a service workshop or at clients' homes or businesses.
• Most workshop sites will be adequately heated and ventilated but off-site conditions will vary.

• The physical demand is sedentary to light but can be medium if larger appliances are taken from the address to the workshop.
• Standing and walking are frequently required on concrete floors in workshops.
• Sitting is not required.
• Stretching up and across is occasionally required to move and access internal components.
• Squatting, crouching, bending, kneeling or crawling is occasionally required.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally required in carrying out many typical work tasks.
• Lifting, carrying or transporting is occasionally required.
• Repetitive movements are occasionally required especially in the use of hands and arms for screwing and unfastening bolts and attaching wiring.
• Driving is frequently required from site to site although some staff may be located in a single site.
• Employees use a wide range of small hand and power tools including screwdrivers, wire cutters and jointers, electric or hand drills and electrical circuit testing equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include technical and problem-solving skills.

• Candidates need to complete an apprenticeship, which usually lasts two to three years and gain the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Appliance and Electronic Servicing - Level 4). Domestic appliance servicepeople learn many of their skills on the job. They may also attend workshops, seminars and training courses to keep up date with the latest appliances.
• To work without supervision, appliance repairers must be registered as an Electrical Service Technician (EST) with the Electrical Workers' Registration Board (EWRB). These can be obtained either after completing a National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Appliance and Electronic Servicing); or by completing 3,000 hours of supervised electrical servicing work and sitting practical and theory-based EST exams.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
