Installs, maintains and repairs gas mains, piping systems downstream of the billing meter, and appliances and ancillary equipment associated with the use of fuel gases, including liquefied petroleum gas systems.

Installs gas appliances, flues and pressure regulating devices.

• Works indoors in a variety of constructions sites and other locations where gas is being used or installed. Also works outdoors when working on gas mains and connecting buildings to main lines.
• Worksites can be dirty and dusty. Employees may also be required to work in confined spaces.
• Protective clothing may be utilised as appropriate.

• The physical demand is medium to heavy.
• Standing is frequently required. Sitting is not required.
• Walking is frequently required about the worksite to move equipment, supplies and carry out various tasks.
• Stretching up and across is frequently required.
• Squatting, crouching, kneeling and lying on one’s back is frequent especially when accessing awkward spaces under houses or between floors.
• Climbing may be required occasionally.
• Bending is frequently required.
• Twisting of the body or neck is frequently required.
• Lifting and carrying materials and equipment about worksite is frequently required.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required especially in the use of hands and arms for the operation of hand tools.
• Driving to worksites may be required.
• Employees frequently use a range of hand, power and machine tools including hammers, hacksaws, clamps and pipe-cutters.
• Mental skills necessary include practical, problem-solving and organisation.

Complete a National Certificate in Plumbing and Gasfitting (this usually takes four years) and sit and pass the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board examinations. (ANZSCO Skill Level 3).

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
