Installs, tests and maintains fire protection equipment and systems such as extinguishers, hoses, reels, hydrants, fire blankets, exit lighting, fire and smoke doors, gaseous fire suppression systems, passive fire and smoke containment systems and foam generating equipment.

Studies drawings and specifications to understand fire protection systems and materials required; sets out and installs systems and associated equipment; conducts tests to determine if equipment is functioning to specification.

• Works both outdoors and indoors in almost all weather conditions – task and site dependent. May work at height and in awkward or confined spaces.
• Work sites are frequently under construction so safety precautions are needed.
• Protective clothing may be utilised as appropriate.

• The physical demand is medium.
• Standing is frequently required. Sitting is not required. Walking is frequently required to move equipment, supplies and carry out various tasks.
• Stretching up and across is frequently required.
• Squatting, crouching, kneeling and lying down is frequently necessary especially when accessing awkward spaces.
• Climbing may be required on a frequent basis.
• Bending is frequently required.
• Twisting of the body or neck is frequently required.
• Lifting and carrying plumbing materials and equipment is frequently required.
• Repetitive movements are occasionally required especially in the use of hands and arms for cutting, screwing and joining fixtures together.
• Driving to worksites is frequently required.
• Employees frequently use a range of hand, power and machine tools including hacksaws, clamps, pipe-cutters, wrenches.
• Mental skills necessary include practical, problem-solving and organisation skills.

The Fire Detection and Alarm Systems Testing Level 3 qualification is designed for people whose work involves inspection and testing of fire detection and alarm systems. Fixed Fire Protection Systems – Installation and Testing Level 3 qualifications are designed for people whose work involves either the installation of fire sprinkler systems, or the testing of fire sprinkler systems and fixed special hazards fire protection systems (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). The Hand Operated Fire Fighting Equipment Level 3 qualification is designed for people in the fire protection industry, whose work involves surveying, selection, installation, commissioning and maintenance of hand-operated fire fighting equipment.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
