Lays ceramic, clay, slate, marble and glass tiles on external and internal walls and floors to provide protective and decorative finishes.

Examines plans, measures and marks surfaces and lays out work; prepares wall and floor surfaces by removing old tiles, grout and adhesive, filling holes and cracks, and cleaning surfaces; spreads adhesive onto prepared surfaces and tiles, and sets tiles in position; uses tile-cutting tools to cut and shape tiles needed for edges and corners, and around objects such as fittings and pipes; ensures tiles are correctly aligned and spaced; grouts tiles, and cleans and removes excess grout; applies waterproofing systems; may lay floors of granolithic, terrazzo, cement or similar composition; may lay coloured tiles in patterns to create mosaics.

• Works predominantly indoors in areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and entryways. Works on a wide variety of construction/building sites, from domestic homes to multi-storey commercial and accommodation complexes and also at locations where renovations are occurring.
• Worksites may be dirty, dusty and wet.
• Protective equipment should be utilised as required, for example the use of face masks due to dust and the use of adhesives.

• Physical demand is medium to heavy.
• Standing and walking are frequently required, but sitting is not required.
• Stretching up and across, squatting, crouching and/or kneeling, and bending are required frequently.
• Climbing ladders may be required to reach top sections of walls.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally to frequently required.
• Lifting and carrying is frequently to constantly required.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required with the use of hands and arms for spreading adhesive, securing tiles, cutting and measuring.
• Driving to worksites will be frequently required.
• Employees use a range of hand and machine tools including measuring tools, cleaning equipment, sanders, cutting instruments, cement mixes and scrapers.
• Mental skills necessary include building, planning and organisational skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient. Registration or licensing may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
