Covers roofs with tiles, sheets and shingles to form a waterproof surface.

• Studies drawings, specifications and work sites to determine materials required
• Erects ladders and scaffolds; places and secures waterproof sheets over eaves
• Nails and staples roofing underlay to roofs; aligns starter rows of roofing material with edges of rooves, secures with wire, staples and nails, and overlaps successive layers of tiles
• Sizes and cuts roofing material to fit around vents, chimney edges, corners and ridges
• Fixes edge and ridge tiles in cement mortar
• Slips roofing material under pre-fabricated flashing and nails it down
• Caulks and flashes exposed nail heads to prevent leaks

• Work outdoors predominantly in most weather conditions
• Works on a wide variety of construction/building sites, from domestic homes to multi-storey commercial, accommodation and large scale industrial complexes
• Works at locations where repair work and renovations are occurring
• Frequently works in exposed situations and at height
• Worksites may be dirty, dusty and wet
• Protective equipment should be utilised as required, for example harnesses when working at height

• The physical demand is medium to very heavy
• Standing and walking are constantly required, but sitting is not required
• Stretching up and across is required frequently to secure waterproof sheeting and other roofing materials
• Squatting, crouching and/or kneeling are frequently required when working on roofs to secure, wire and staple
• Bending is required frequently to carry out required work tasks
• Climbing ladders or work on scaffolds is frequently required often at heights/on roofs
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally required
• Lifting and carrying is frequently required
• Repetitive movements are frequently required with the use of hands and arms for cutting, hammering, stapling and aligning of roofing materials
• Driving to worksites will be frequently required
• Employees use a range of hand and machine construction tools including hammers, nail guns, caulking guns, cutting instruments, wire, tiles and other roofing material
• Mental skills necessary include building, planning and organisational skills

• A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.
• Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) licencing is required in order to undertake or supervise Restricted Building Work, unless supervised by another LBP.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
