Measures, cuts, finishes, fits and installs flat glass and mirrors.

Determines type and dimensions of glass required; lays glass over patterns on padded tables and in jigs; measures and marks glass for cutting; examines glass and marks defective areas; cuts along patterns and templates; breaks off sheets and excess glass with notched tools and glass pliers; installs glass and mirrors in windows, skylights, display cases, interior walls and ceilings; smoothes rough edges, using belt sanders and smoothing wheels; may coat, cut, etch, trim and treat glass to achieve special effects.

• Works indoors in a glazing workshop which will usually be adequately heated and ventilated.
• Also works outside when fitting windows and doors to buildings.
• Frequently handles glass and sharp edges.

• Physical demand is light to medium, standing is constantly required when working at machinery, cutting glass or installing windows.
• Walking is frequently required to move between equipment, supplies and when delivering completed glass projects.
• Sitting is not a significant requirement of the job.
• Stretching both up and across and bending is occasionally required when working with larger items of glass to remove, cut or fit them in place. Less likely for smaller items.
• Squatting, crouching or kneeling is required on occasionally to frequently.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally required in carrying and moving larger sheets of glass.
• Handling of glass is constantly required.
• Lifting and carrying of glass sheets about the worksite or workshop is frequently required but unlikely to exceed medium physical demand.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required.
• Driving is frequently required.
• Use of a range of measuring, glass cutting, hand and abrasive bevelling tools/machines is frequent. Employees work with water and abrasives.
• Mental skills necessary include practical measurement, technical and problem-solving skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
