Plans, organises, directs, controls and reviews through subordinates, the day-to-day operations and major functions of a prison.

Sets standards and objectives for the prison; provides direction and management of the prison with the intent of maximising security, ensuring the protection of the community and ensuring the wellbeing and rehabilitation of inmates; assesses situations and responds accordingly by issuing commands and directives to subordinate staff; consults with immediate subordinates and departmental heads on matters such as methods of operation, equipment requirements, finance, legislative requirements and human resources; controls expenditure to meet budget targets; represents the prison at official occasions, in negotiations, at conventions, seminars, public hearings and forums; prepares, or arranges for the preparation of, reports, budgets and forecasts, and presents them to governing bodies; selects and manages the performance of senior staff.

• Typically indoors in prison facilities usually in adequately heated and ventilated
• May interact with inmates in very stressful and distressing personal situations. Offenders may at times be aggressive, violent and hostile.

• This is sedentary work requiring frequent to constant sitting in offices or in meetings.
• Stands and walks occasionally from office to office. Stands occasionally for brief periods of time when speaking in public.
• Lifting, carrying or pulling is not a significant requirement of the role.
• Bending, squatting or crouching is not a significant requirement.
• There are occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements required when using pens, calculators, keyboard and mouse.
• Occasional to frequent use of office equipment such as phones and computers.
• Driving is not typically a significant component of the job.
• Mental skills necessary include assessment, analytical, computing, communication, decision-making, evaluation, report writing, knowledge of relevant legislation and communication skills with cultural sensitivity and knowledge.

A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
