Measures, cuts, installs and repairs soft and resilient floor coverings.

Measures areas to be covered and consults plans to estimate quantities of floor covering materials required; prepares surface by removing old floor coverings, fixing woodwork, filling holes and cracks, and smoothing and sealing surfaces and removing baseboard trims; measures, cuts and fixes underlay materials; lays underlay and covering materials on floors, matches patterns, cuts shapes around fixtures and trims edges.

• Works indoors in a wide range of domestic and commercial sites.
• The work area will usually be adequately heated and ventilated. It may be a newly constructed area or a replacement of existing floor covering.
• Likely to work back at their workshop or storage area when joining pieces of carpet.
• The environment may be dusty.

• Physical demand is heavy.
• Standing and walking is frequently required.
• Stretching across is frequently required as employees carry out their work.
• Stretching up is occasionally required if the carpet or vinyl is to cover walls.
• Squatting, crouching or kneeling is frequently required when working at marking out, cutting, tacking or gluing down coverings.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally required when lifting and moving carpet or vinyl.
• Contact with water or skin irritants can occur; some adhesives require the use of breathing apparatus.
• Lifting and carrying is frequently required when transporting carpet and vinyl rolls and is likely to be of heavy physical demand.
• Repetitive movements of the hands and arms for tasks such as cutting, joining, tacking or stapling are frequent.
• Driving is not generally a requirement.
• Uses a range of hand and electric tools including measuring equipment, special carpet cutting knives and machines, heat machines to seal joints, and variety of other hand tools.
• Bending is frequently required while laying floor-coverings.
• Mental skills needed are practical, problem-solving, measuring and organisation.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
