Prepares surfaces of vehicles, matches and mixes colours and applies paint.

Removes rough spots on vehicle panels; sands surfaces by hand and with power sanders; masks area not to be painted with tape and paper; colour matches and mixes paints to match paint shade, and selects pre-mixed paint; applies primer and finishing coats using spray guns, and sands surfaces between coats; touches up paintwork and applies polish to vehicles; removes masking papers, and waxes and polishes finished paintwork; paints signs and artwork on vehicles; treats vehicles with rust-proofing chemicals.

• Works indoors, in appropriately ventilated workshops.
• Employees can be required to work outdoors.
• Works with paint, lacquer and solvent fumes which often require the use of respirators or specialised ventilation equipment if indoors.
• Work sites may be dirty, especially when preparing surfaces and applying paint.

• The physical demand is light to medium.
• Standing is constantly required. Walking is frequently required to move equipment, supplies and carry out various tasks. Sitting is not required.
• Stretching up and across is required frequently. Squatting or crouching is occasionally required especially to access low level and awkward surfaces.
• Twisting of the body or neck is frequently required for some tasks and to survey where to apply paint.
• Lifting and carrying painting materials and equipment about the worksite is frequently required but is unlikely to exceed a medium demand level.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required especially in the use of hands and arms for spraying, sanding and preparing surfaces.
• Driving is not a significant feature of the job.
• Employees use a range of hand, power and machine tools and equipment including paint sprayer and compressors, scrapers, water-blasters and sanders.
• Bending is occasionally required when mixing paint or cleaning down surfaces.
• Climbing ladders or working from scaffolding if spray-painting buses or industrial structures is occasionally required.
• Mental skills necessary include painting practical and organisational skills.

Have a New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient. Registration or licensing may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
