Makes and repairs tools, dies, jigs, fixtures and other precision parts and equipment to fine tolerances for machine tools and other production machinery.

Studies drawings and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of articles to be manufactured and models to be constructed; measures and marks out metal stock and castings using various gauges; shapes metal and wood stock using machine tools; checks accuracy of manufactured articles and finished patterns to fine tolerances, using precision measuring instruments; tests and modifies manufactured articles; applies protective finishes to patterns and painting pattern sections to indicate method of assembly; assembles pattern sections and shapes work pieces to specified finish.

• Works indoors in a precision engineering workshop. Frequently noisy, dusty and dirty situations. Work spaces usually have good ventilation to disperse gases and other by-products of welding and other engineering processes.
• Workers utilise a variety of personal protective equipment including safety glasses, ear muffs, overalls, and steel-capped boots.

• The physical demand is medium.
• Standing is constantly required and it is frequently on concrete floors. Walking about workshop is frequently required. Sitting is not required.
• Stretching up or across and squatting, crouching or kneeling are not a significant components of the job.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally required.
• Lifting and carrying of metals and other materials about the workshop is frequently required but is unlikely to exceed a medium physical demand. Bending is occasionally required.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required especially in the use of hands and arms for carrying out machining activities.
• Driving is not usually required.
• Frequent to constant use of a wide range of hand and machine tools.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, practical and organisational skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
