Sets up, adjusts and maintains industrial or domestic sewing machines, or machines used in the production of yarn, textiles or footwear.

Sets guides, stops and other controls on machining tools, sets up and sets controls for textile machines; diagnoses faults and performs operational maintenance of machines, and overhauls and repairs; may erect machines and equipment on-site.

• Works indoors in textile workshops.
• Indoor work spaces are likely to be well ventilated to disperse gasses and other by-products of production.
• Worksites may be dirty and dusty and noisy.

• The physical demand is up to a medium requirement.
• Standing is constantly required, frequently on concrete floors.
• Sitting may be required when carrying out repairs on industrial sewing machines.
• Walking is frequently required to move equipment, supplies and carry out various tasks.
• Stretching up, across and under is frequently required when setting up machines and carrying out maintenance.
• Squatting, bending, crouching or kneeling is occasionally required.
• Twisting of the body or neck may be required occasionally but is not a significant component of this job.
• Lifting and carrying is frequently required to transport materials and equipment about the workshop, and is likely to be of a medium physical demand.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required especially in the use of hands and arms for holding and using spanners, gauges, screwdrivers and socket sets.
• Driving is not required.
• A wide range of engineering hand, power and machine tools and equipment is used.
• Mental skills necessary include practical, technical, welding and problem-solving skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
