Polishes metal to impart smooth, reflective and other finishes.

Finishes metal and articles by polishing and buffing and applying shellac, lacquer, paint and other finishes.

• Works indoors in factories and workshops, frequently at workbenches / machines.
• Work spaces will usually be adequately heated and ventilated to disperse heat and other by-products of metal-working processes.
• Work sites may be dirty and noisy, especially if constantly working with metal objects.
• Employees use a variety of personal protective equipment including breathing, ear and eye protection as appropriate for specific tasks.

• Light to medium work.
• Stands constantly frequently on concrete floors to operate buffing/polishing machines.
• Walks about the work space to move items, supplies and carry out various tasks.
• Sitting is not a significant component of the job.
• Stretches both out and across frequently to hold, push and move metal items against buffing/polishing tools or machines.
• Squatting, crouching or kneeling is occasionally required.
• Twisting the body or neck is required on an occasional to frequent basis.
• Employees frequently handle metal items and a variety of solvents, abrasive tools and pads that are likely to cause damage to skin on hands.
• Workers frequently lift and carry metal items and equipment about the workshop/factory.
• Repetitive tasks are constant, especially in the use of hands and arms for holding items while polishing and cleaning.
• Driving is not required.
• Workers use a range of light engineering hand and power tools and metal finishing/polishing items.
• Occasional bending is required.
• Mental skills necessary include practical, metal-working knowledge and technical skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
