Installs, maintains and repairs electrical wiring and electronic components in motor vehicles.

Uses test equipment to locate electrical and electronic malfunctions; dismantles and removes electrical and electronic assemblies and components; installs electrical equipment and electronic components in motor vehicles; connects power-operated vehicle equipment and accessories to power supply, adjusts engine control systems and timing; tests and replaces defective alternators, generators, voltage regulators and starter motors; repairs and replaces faulty ignition and electrical wiring; replaces defective parts such a fuses, lamps and switches.

• Works indoors predominantly, but may work outdoors for significant periods when carrying out repairs at breakdown sites.
• Works in all weather conditions when outdoors, often inside the vehicle/vessel being repaired.
• Frequently works in awkward or confined spaces to access electrical components, works in auto-electrical, locomotive or aircraft maintenance workshops or on ships.
• May work from ladders or lifting platforms when working on larger vehicles.

• The physical demand is medium.
• Standing is constantly required, frequently on concrete floors. Walking is occasionally required. Sitting is not required. Squatting, crouching or kneeling is occasionally required
• Stretching up and across and twisting of the body or neck are frequently required.
• Lifting and carrying of heavy electrical components and manoeuvring these in and out of place is occasionally required.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required especially in the use of hands and arms for screwing, cutting and fixing of cabling and electrical fittings.
• Driving is not a significant component of the job.
• Use a wide range of hand, power and machine tools including screwdrivers, wire cutters and jointers, electric and hand drills, electrical circuit testing meters, hammers and other electrical and mechanical tools and equipment.
• Bending, climbing ladders and working at height are occasionally to frequently required if working on aircraft, locomotives, large trucks or ships.
• Mental skills necessary include technical and problem-solving skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient. Registration or licensing may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
