Plans, designs, commissions and monitors complex telecommunications networks and associated equipment, provides technical advice and information and identifies complex problems and initiates action to resolve them.

Configures and integrates networks and telecommunications technology with computer software, hardware, desktops, peripherals, databases and operating systems; develops and records logs of the details, locations and status of inventories, parts, equipment and instruments and maintains the documentation of communication policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations, and quality standards; provides technical advice and information, and monitors the performance of complex telecommunications networks and equipment.

• Works indoors in workshops, offices and other sites where telecommunications (including internet) equipment is being installed and used.
• Works areas are generally adequately heated and ventilated.

• The physical demand for this job is light but occasionally medium.
• Standing and walking is frequently required when installing telecommunication systems.
• Sitting is frequently required when recording logs, communication policies and procedures.
• Stretching and reaching across is likely to be an occasional requirement.
• Bending, squatting, and crouching or kneeling, will be occasionally required, especially for installation work.
• Twisting of the body or neck occasionally required if in confined spaces.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is unlikely.
• Lifting, pulling, and carrying is unlikely to exceed a medium physical demand level.
• Repetitive movements are likely to be occasional to frequent, and relate to the use of hand tools, and use of computers for data entry and reporting.
• Use of hand tools, hand-held objects and power equipment will include a variety of testing and computer equipment as well as items such as screwdrivers.
• Driving of vehicles is unlikely to be a frequent requirement.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, mathematical, computing and problem-solving skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 5 or 6 qualification or at least three years relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
