Supports and maintains computer systems and peripherals by installing, configuring, testing, troubleshooting and repairing hardware.

Determines software and hardware requirements to provide solutions to problems; responds to queries on software and hardware problems; installs and downloads appropriate software; adapting existing programs to meet users’ requirements; ensuring efficient use of applications and equipment; implementing computer networks, designing and maintaining websites; repairing and replacing peripheral equipment such as terminals, printer and modems; may work in a call centre.

• Works indoors in various situations including manufacturing, scientific and other data processing organisations.
• Usually works in an adequately ventilated and heated workspace.
• Works at a computer and/or office workstation, and controls computerised data-processing equipment.

• The physical demand is light
• Sitting or standing is frequently required at a computerised control point to monitor and adjust operations of processing machines.
• Walking about the worksite is occasionally required.
• Stretching and reaching across is not a significant component of the job.
• Bending, squatting, crouching or kneeling will be required occasionally.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant component of the job.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant component of the job.
• Lifting, pulling or carrying requirements are unlikely to exceed light physical demand levels.
• Repetitive movements relate to the use of keyboards to enter programme data and analyse problems.
• Driving of vehicles is not a significant component of the job although in some roles site visits are likely to be necessary.
• Use of hand tools/hand-held objects will include computer and office hand tools.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, keyboarding and problem-solving skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 5 or 6 qualification or at least three years relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
