This occupation group covers building and engineering technicians not elsewhere classified. Occupations in this group include aircraft detail draftsperson, aircraft systems technician (Air Force), airframe technical officer, avionics systems technician (Air Force), biomedical technician, mining detail draftsperson and shipbuilding draftsperson.

Selects tools and equipment; assembles and installs new and modified assemblies, components and controls; estimates material costs and quantities; performs and directs field tests; prepares designs, plans and schedules for mining operations; designs ships; collects and analyses data, carries out complex computations and prepares diagrams; organises and supervises inspection and maintenance of machines and plant; ensures that designs and finished work are within specifications, regulations and contract provisions.

• Works indoors and may work outdoors.
• Utilises appropriate protective equipment and clothing as required.
• Workplaces may be noisy, smelly, hot, cold and dirty.

• The physical demand is medium to heavy.
• Standing and walking is constant.
• Sitting is frequent when analysing data and formulating reports.
• Stretching and reaching across is likely to be frequent when working on-site. Employees may also need to climb ladders and work from raised platforms.
• Bending, squatting, crouching or kneeling will be required to varying degrees depending on the nature of the work being undertaken.
• Twisting of the body or neck is likely to be occasionally required when working in a confined space.
• Contact with skin irritants or water may be required.
• Heavy lifting, pulling, or carrying is an occasional requirement.
• Repetitive movements are required when using computers and hand tools/hand-held objects, carrying out design work and using general office equipment such as writing instruments, telephones and faxes.
• Driving of vehicles may be required occasionally.
• Use of hand tools is frequent and will include engineering hand tools and measuring equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, drawing, computing, communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 5 or 6 qualification or at least three years relevant experience. In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). Registration or licensing may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
