Inspects machines, equipment, working conditions and public places to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.

Examines equipment specifications, and inspects and tests machines, equipment and clothing to ensure compliance with safety standards and serviceability; inspects factories and other work sites to ensure compliance with safety standards and serviceability, and to ensure compliance with government and industry standards and regulations; observes workers to ensure protective devices are being utilised and that combustible and other hazardous materials are used and stored in accordance with approved procedures; conducts tests in work areas to detect work hazards; ensures fire prevention equipment and other safety supplies conform to standards; assists in conducting safety meeting and campaigns, and organising training in general safety principles; advises, on ways to comply with occupational health and safety legislative requirements; investigates incidents, including fatalities, to determine causes and to collect evidence of non-compliance with occupational health and safety legislation.

• Works indoors or outdoors as appropriate for the inspection role or task.
• Usually works in adequately heated and ventilated spaces. Appropriate clothing/protective clothing or equipment, for the weather and/or tasks, will be required to be worn.
• The work may involve investigation or enforcement situations.

• The physical demand is light.
• Standing and walking is frequent. Stretching up and reaching across, and bending squatting, crouching and kneeling are required occasionally. Climbing is also required for some inspection tasks. Twisting of the body or neck and lifting, carrying and pulling are not a significant requirement.
• Driving is likely to be required on a frequent basis for site visits.
• Use of hand-held tools and power tools will include computers and other record-keeping/office equipment and for some roles cameras and electronic or other equipment to record environmental data such as noise or gas emission levels. Contact with skin irritants or water is not required. Repetitive movements with hands may be occasionally required in operating keyboard for report writing.
• Mental skills necessary include safety, analytical/investigative, problem solving, computing, report writing, knowledge of relevant laws and regulations, decision-making and communication.

Health and Safety Inspector need to have a Health and Safety Inspector's Warrant from the MBIE (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). This requires passing exams, which can take 12 months or more to complete. A Warrant must then be renewed every three years.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
