Prepares detailed drawings and plans of mechanical engineering work in support of mechanical engineers and engineering technologists.

Prepares drawings, plans and designs for mechanical engineering work under the direction of mechanical engineers and engineering technologists; assists mechanical engineers and engineering technologists in the design of mechanical equipment and plants.

• Works indoors in workshops, factories and offices associated with mechanical engineering firms.
• Workplaces are often adequately heated and ventilated but some may also be noisy and dirty.

• The physical demand is light.
• Standing and walking will be required occasionally to gather equipment and when assisting mechanical engineers.
• Sitting at drafting boards, workbenches or computers to design and draw mechanical engineering work is a frequent to constant requirement.
• Stretching and reaching across is likely to be occasional but not significant when carrying out design and drawing tasks.
• Bending, squatting, crouching, or kneeling, is not a significant feature of the job.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant feature of the job.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not required.
• Lifting, pulling, and carrying is unlikely to exceed a light physical demand.
• Repetitive movements will be necessary for frequent use of hand tools and computers.
• Driving is not likely to be a significant requirement of the job.
• Use of hand-held objects including writing and drawing instruments and computers will be frequent to constant.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, drawing, computing, communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 5 or 6 qualification or at least three years relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
