Inspects drainage work and materials for local authorities or the larger construction firms, as either an employee or contractor, to ensure compliance with relevant plans, specifications, regulations, standards, codes of practice, and consents.

Gains and maintains an understanding of current drainage regulations, standards, and codes of practice. Interprets site-specific plans, specifications, and consents. Diaries inspection requests and travels to construction and renovation sites. Inspects drainage work and materials for compliance with drainage plans, specifications, regulations, standards, codes of practice, and consents. Advises site manager of any areas of non-compliance and requests rectification, verbally and/or in writing. Certifies drainage work and issues relevant documentation.

• Works indoors in offices and primarily outdoors at construction and renovation sites. May also complete some tasks from inside a vehicle.
• Indoor work areas are generally adequately ventilated and heated. However employees work in all weather conditions when outdoors. Construction and renovation sites at times will be cold, hot, wet, dusty, and noisy.
• Protective equipment and clothing is utilised as appropriate.

• The physical demand is light to medium.
• Standing and walking is required when inspecting drainage work.
• Sitting is frequently required at desks and ICT workstations when studying drainage compliance requirements, preparing for inspections, and completing associated administration tasks.
• Stretching and reaching across is likely to be required on an occasional basis.
• Bending, squatting, crouching, or kneeling is likely to be required when carrying out inspection work.
• Twisting of the body or neck will be required when carrying out inspections.
• Contact with skin irritants or water may be required, but is not a significant component of the role.
• Lifting, pulling, or carrying is required, but is unlikely to exceed medium physical demand.
• Repetitive movements are likely to occur occasionally when operating ICT devices and various hand tools/hand-held objects.
• Driving of vehicles will be a frequent requirement to enable inspections of sites.
• Use of hand tools/hand-held objects will include building and three-water system plans, drainage inspection tools, writing instruments, ICT devices, and other general office equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include: a high-level understanding of drainage compliance requirements, drainage systems and materials, and building plans; digital literacy; communication; mathematics; and problem-solving skills.

• Hold a New Zealand Certificate in Drainlaying (Level 5), or a comparable qualification with significant experience in drainlaying, or have at least three years of work experience at a certifying level, and gain registration as a Certifying Drainlayer with the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may also be required.
• A Class 1 Driver Licence will be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
