Measures standing trees to work out their size and value, or measures logs in the forest, at wharves or sawmills, to ensure that the logs meet clients' needs.

Locate (by using a compass and a map), measure and sample forest plots, measure standing trees in forest plots using laser and ultrasound devices as well as tape measures, estimate tree quality and grades so that the value and volume of trees may be determined, collect wood samples and data for forest owners, record data on hand-held computers.

• Frequently travels to and work in forest plots.
• Frequently works outdoors in a range of forest settings including environments within silviculture, harvesting and wood processing sectors of the industry.
• Outdoors environments are often hazardous and protective equipment and clothing will be required (hard hat and boots).

• Medium physical demand.
• Frequently stands and walks in fieldwork situations.
• Occasional lifting, pulling or carrying within medium to heavy range when working with trees, plants and forestry related equipment.
• Bending, squatting, crouching or kneeling and stretching, twisting and climbing is occasionally required when performing fieldwork tasks.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a frequent component of the job.
• Protective clothing is required.
• Driving of vehicles is occasionally to frequently required to carry out fieldwork.
• Use of hand tools/hand-held objects is occasionally to frequently required.
• Mental skills necessary include map reading, knowledge of sampling methods, tree growth and forestry, calculation sand recording skills.

A relevant NZQF Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
