Inspects incoming animals, plants, and animal and plant products to ensure compliance with laws and regulations to prevent the spread of exotic pests and diseases.

Examines imported plants and animals, and products, such as timber, seeds and dried fruits, and makes quarantine arrangements as required.

• Works indoors in offices and containment facilities connected to international airports and seaports.
• Works outdoors on wharfs, boats and other outdoor storage areas.
• Indoor work spaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated.
• Usually works in all weather conditions when working outdoors.
• Wears protective clothing and utilises protective equipment as necessary.

• The physical demand is light to medium.
• Standing and walking is constantly required when inspecting imported goods.
• Employees may sit when writing reports.
• Stretching up and reaching across is likely to be occasionally required when examining animals and other imported products such as timber.
• Bending, squatting, crouching and kneeling are likely to be required occasionally when carrying out inspections.
• Twisting of the body or neck may be required occasionally.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is likely to be occasional to frequent; protective clothing and equipment should be utilised where appropriate.
• Lifting, carrying and pulling is likely to be required to a medium physical demand level.
• Repetitive movements are likely to be required when operating a computer.
• Driving is not required.
• Use of hand-held tools and power tools will include testing and inspecting instruments, personal protective equipment, writing instruments and computers.
• Mental skills necessary include plant and animal knowledge, computing, report writing and knowledge of relevant laws and regulations, decision-making and communication skills.

A degree in horticulture, agriculture, forestry or biological sciences is preferred (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). Applicants also need to have relevant work experience, pass an eye test and complete security and police checks.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
