This occupation group covers medical technicians not elsewhere classified. Occupations in this group include: audiometrist; dialysis technician; electroencephalographic technician; mortuary technician; neurophysiological technician; ophthalmic technician; respiratory technician, orthotic and prosthetic technician; perfusionist; renal technician; sleep technician.

Operates equipment used in diagnosing and monitoring disorders of hearing, the heart, kidneys and nervous system, and in anaesthesia; undertakes and assists with medical analytical procedures and assists anaesthetists and surgical teams; records the electrical activity of the heart, from which the heart rate is measured and pattern and rhythm is interpreted; prepares and stains slides and tissue sections to study the cells of blood for histological examination; performs diagnostic tests on tissues and fluids and analyses the chemical constituents of blood, urine, faeces and tissues; tests for diseases by looking for the presence of antibodies and the products of immune response in samples; sets up, checks and maintains operating theatres, and anaesthetic workstations, life support machines and associated equipment.

Works indoors in adequately heated and ventilated spaces and operates a variety of specialised items of medical technology. Required to follow health and safety procedures, and wear appropriate protective clothing.

• The physical demand is typically light but occasionally is medium for roles that involve setting up equipment.
• Standing and walking will be frequent, and sitting may be occasional.
• Stretching and reaching across and bending are likely to be occasional.
• Squatting, crouching and kneeling is unlikely to be necessary.
• Twisting of the body or neck is unlikely to be necessary.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is unlikely.
• Lifting, carrying and holding is likely on a frequent basis when moving/using medical equipment, but unlikely to exceed light physical demand level. Technically advanced equipment will usually be operated from a computer screen and control panel.
• Repetitive movements are unlikely to be necessary.
• Driving of vehicles is not required.
• Use of equipment will include various specialised technical, laboratory and surgical equipment, computers and office/record-keeping equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, interpretation, computing, organisational and communication skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 5 or 6 qualification or at least three years relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
