Prepares and maintains operating theatres and equipment, assists the surgical team during operations and provides support to patients in the recovery room.

Sets up, checks and maintains operating theatres, anaesthetic workstations, life support machines and associated equipment.

• Works inside in operating theatres and associated areas such as recovery rooms at public and private hospitals.
• Work spaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated and all operating areas will be sterile.
• Likely to work in areas where there is the potential for contact with bodily fluids and contaminates, protective clothing will be utilised at all times.

• Physical demand is up to medium.
• Standing and walking is frequently required when setting up theatres prior to surgery and providing assistance to surgical teams during procedures.
• Sitting may be required occasionally when writing reports and updating records
• Stretching and reaching across may be required when setting up operating theatres.
• Bending, squatting, crouching or kneeling is not a significant requirement.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant requirement.
• Contact with contaminants or/and bodily fluids may be required on a frequent basis due to often being based in operating theatres and patient recovery areas; protective clothing will be utilised at all times.
• Lifting, pulling or carrying is occasionally required but is unlikely to exceed the medium demand level.
• Repetitive movements are not a significant component of the job but are likely to be required when assisting in operations and when using computers or monitors.
• Driving of vehicles is not required.
• Use of hand tools/hand-held objects will include medical instruments, monitors, computers and writing instruments.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, medical, organisational, problem-solving and communication.

A relevant NZQF Level 4 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
