Conducts tests on patients to record heart activity using specialised equipment, recording devices and laboratory instruments in support of cardiologists and other medical practitioners engaged in diagnosing, monitoring and treating heart disease.

Operates equipment used in diagnosing and monitoring disorders of the heart, kidneys, nervous system; records the electrical activity of the heart, from which the heart rate is measured and pattern and rhythm interpreted.

• Works inside in laboratories, testing facilities and hospital rooms at public and private hospitals and other medical facilities.
• Work spaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated and possibly sterile.

• Physical demand is light.
• Standing, walking and sitting is frequently required when monitoring machines, collecting data and carrying out laboratory tests.
• Stretching and reaching across is not a significant requirement.
• Bending, squatting, crouching or kneeling is not a significant requirement.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not required.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant requirement.
• Lifting, pulling or carrying is occasionally required but is unlikely to exceed the light demand level.
• Repetitive movements are likely to be required when operating monitors, computers and carrying out laboratory tests.
• Driving of vehicles is not required.
• Use of hand tools/hand-held objects will include medical instruments, monitors, laboratory equipment, computers and writing instruments.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, analytical, research, medical, organisational, problem-solving and communication skills and knowledge.

A relevant NZQF Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Note that the specialisation Cardiac Technologist is Skill Level 1.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
