AB Technicians perform artificial inseminations on female livestock, predominantly cows, to achieve high conception rates and increase production as a result of faster genetic gain through selectively using superior sires.

Schedules insemination runs as directed/requested; selects, stores, and transports required semen and equipment; drives/navigates to rural worksites; handles animals humanely; performs inseminations; records details of inseminations (typically using a hand-held device); cleans and disinfects equipment; may perform pregnancy testing and provide some information to farmers and breeders on breeding selection and techniques.

• Works indoors when scheduling runs, selecting semen straws and preparing equipment, keeping records, and in meetings with supervisors or farmers. May also perform some administration tasks from a vehicle cab.
• Works outdoors or in farm buildings/structures when liaising with farmers onsite and performing inseminations.
• Appropriate clothing and protective equipment for the weather and/or tasks, such as handling liquid nitrogen, will be required.
• Likely to work extended hours, under pressure, during peak insemination season.

• The physical demand is light to heavy.
• Standing and walking is frequently required when performing insemination tasks.
• Sitting will be frequent when driving or working in the office.
• Stretching up and reaching across is frequently required.
• Bending, squatting, crouching, and kneeling is occasionally required.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally to frequently required.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is possible but will be mitigated by the use of protective clothing/equipment.
• Lifting, carrying, and pulling is required on an occasional basis.
• Repetitive movements with hands will be required when performing insemination and recording data.
• Driving is frequently required.
• Use of hand-held objects and tools will occur for insemination tasks, data-recording, and for office-based work.
• Mental skills necessary include: good concentration; ability to follow procedures; strong attention to detail - particularly around reading and recording identity codes; accurate record-keeping; digital literacy; and good communication, planning, and organisation skills.

• To become an Artificial Breeding/Insemination Technician candidates need to: complete a New Zealand Certificate in Artificial Insemination of Livestock (Level 4); or complete a shorter industry-based block-course and then be supervised and complete further formal training on-the-job. Individuals with prior practical experience may be able to complete refresher/upskilling training.
• A Class 1 Driver Licence will be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
