Assembles historical data by consulting sources of information such as historical indexes and catalogues, archives, court records, diaries, newspaper files and other materials; organises, authenticates, evaluates and interprets historical, political, sociological, anthropological and linguistic data; undertakes historical and cultural research into human activity, and prepares and presents research findings.

• Works indoors in offices within libraries, schools or universities, government departments, local authorities, museums or organisations such as the Waitangi Tribunal.
• Works in adequately heated, lit, ventilated and clean, well maintained office workspaces.

• Sedentary physical demand.
• Frequently sits in offices or at computers when analysing or interpreting data.
• Occasionally stands, walks and moves from office to office, to archives and library areas.
• Lifting, carrying or pulling is not a significant feature of this job.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using a computer or writing.
• There is frequent use of hand-held objects and equipment including computers, microfiche, audiovisual equipments, recorders, scanners and printers.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with verbal and written communication, research, data collection, mathematical, statistical, analytical, policy development and interpretation, project management, computing, presentation, planning, report writing, organisational, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
