The role involves performing research and some teaching in a university setting. A Research Fellow is differentiated from a Post-doctorate Research Fellow in that the Research Fellow is highly experienced and is typically pursuing a university appointment.

Research Fellows conduct research as part of a larger research programme and may supervise post-doctoral students. Teaching may be part of the role.

• When not engaged with fieldwork will, work indoors in office, laboratory, library, archives, or teaching spaces within a university. Works in adequately heated, lit, ventilated and clean, well-maintained workspaces.
• Depending on the discipline involved, fieldwork may require working in all weather conditions and dangerous situations. Personal protective equipment may be required.

• Sedentary physical demand when not on fieldwork. Depending on the type of research being conducted physical demand can increase to heavy. Frequently sits when analysing or interpreting data.
• Occasionally stands, walks, or moves between spaces within the university.
• Lifting, carrying, or pulling may be required if fieldwork is necessary.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements may be required when using a computer or writing or using data collection equipment.
• There is frequent use of hand-held objects and equipment including computers, microfiche, audiovisual equipment, technical and laboratory equipment, recorders, scanners, and printers.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with verbal and written communication, research, data collection, mathematical, statistical, analytical, policy development and interpretation, project and budget management, computing, presentation, planning, report writing, organisational, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.

A relevant Doctoral Degree (PhD), with at least five years post-doctoral experience of working in teaching or research in a tertiary education setting (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances, particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
