Transfers a source text from one language into another, usually within an extended time frame to allow for corrections and modifications and without the presence of the participants requiring the translation.

• Provides simultaneous and consecutive verbal or signed renditions of speeches into another language; renders the meaning and feeling of what is said and signed into another language in the appropriate register and style in a range of settings such as courts, hospitals, schools, workplaces and conferences.

• Works indoors in offices, meeting rooms and other spaces.

• May work outdoors when giving public addresses for example.

• Works in adequately heated, lit, ventilated and clean, well maintained office workspaces.

• Sedentary physical demand.

• Sits and occasionally stands, walks and moves around to carry out interpreting services.

• Lifting, carrying or pulling is not a significant component of the job.

• Occasionally repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using a computer or writing.

• There is frequent use of hand-held objects, materials and equipment including foreign and specialist dictionaries, dictaphones, video recording and playback equipment, writing tools, computers telephones, reference books and on line information.

• Occasional driving in cars may be required if travelling to visit clients.

• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with ability to translate and interpret from one language to another, listening, verbal and written communication, analysis, computing, research, report writing, organisational, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

• A Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting or an equivalent overseas qualification is needed to become a sign language interpreter.
