• Conducts services of worship and acknowledgment of faith; delivers sermons, homilies, special talks, and plans music for services; participates in activities of communities, encourages people to be aware of their responsibilities, and organises community projects; conducts classes of religious instruction, and supervises prayer and discussion groups, retreats and seminars; conducts premarital and family counselling and refers people to professional service agencies where necessary; performs marriages, funerals and special memorial services according to tradition and ecclesiastical and civil law; visits members of the community in their homes, hospitals and other institutions to provide advice and religious comfort; keeps records as required by the church and civil law.

• Works indoors in churches and related buildings, schools, universities and hospitals in chaplaincy contexts. May also move about the community to visit church members in their homes and other community organisations such as hospitals or schools.

• Occasionally may work outside.

• Works in adequately heated, lit, ventilated and clean, well maintained and workspaces.

• Sedentary physical demand.

• Sits to meet with church members, in counselling sessions, at meetings and when preparing sermons and services.

• Occasionally walks and moves around the workspace and stands for periods of an hour or more to conduct services or present sermons.

• Contact with water is not a significant component of the role.

• There is no significant requirement for lifting, carrying or pulling.

• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using a computer for preparing services, sermons and other material.

• There is frequent use of hand-held objects, materials and equipment including computers, writing tools, reference materials, books, audio visual equipment. May use chalices, gowns and other symbolic items as part of church services.

• There is occasional use and operation of office machines such as telephones, printers, scanners and faxes.

• Occasional driving may be required to visit workplaces, schools and homes.

• Mental skills include verbal and written communication, interpersonal, administration, analysis and evaluation, research, information gathering, planning, organisational, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required. Registration or licensing may be required.
