A Death Doula plays a pivotal role in providing emotional, spiritual, and logistical support to individuals nearing the end of their lives. Death Doulas aim to empower individuals to experience a more peaceful and meaningful transition.

Facilitates discussions about an individual's end-of-life preferences; offers guidance to both the dying person and their family and friends; in addition to assisting with funeral and memorial planning, a Death Doula also serves as a resource in navigating the complexities of grief and loss; fosters open communication, promotes informed choices, and advocates for a dignified passing; creates a calming environment; may occasionally provide some in-home practical support; may be in attendance as their client is dying.

• Works indoors in hospices, residential homes, hospitals, and consulting room environments.
• Works in adequately heated, lit, ventilated, and clean, well-maintained, and private workspaces.

• Sedentary physical demand.
• Sits to meet with clients or at a desk/computer when preparing or writing notes, plans, or correspondence.
• Occasionally stands, walks, and moves around the workspace.
• Lifting, carrying, or pulling is not a significant requirement.
• Repetitive movements are not a significant component of the job.
• There is occasional use of hand-held objects and equipment including computers, writing tools, reference materials, recording equipment, and office machines such as telephones, printers, and scanners.
• Occasional driving of cars may be required to attend appointments with clients.
• Mental skills necessary include: a high level of cognitive and counselling skills; verbal and written communication abilities; interpersonal skills, particularly empathy; administration, assessment, research, information gathering, analysis and evaluation, organisational, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
• Doula training can be accessed through International End-of-Life Doula Association (INELDA), the Conscious Dying Institute, and DoulaGivers.
• For specific roles involving driving a Class 1 Driver Licence will be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement.
