Provides support and treatment for people with drug and alcohol dependency problems, develops strategies which assist them to set goals and affect and maintain change, and provides community education. May work in a call centre.

• Assesses client needs in relation to treatment for drug and alcohol abuse; conducts counselling interviews with individuals, couples and family groups; assists people in the understanding and adjustment of attitudes, expectations and behaviour; presents alternative approaches and discusses potential for attitude and behavioural change; consults with clients to develop rehabilitation plans taking account of vocational and social needs; may work in a call centre.

• Works indoors in offices and consulting room environments within clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centres and public and private practices.
• Works in adequately heated, lit, ventilated and clean, well maintained and private workspaces.

• Sedentary physical demand.
• Sits to meet with clients or at computers when preparing or writing reports.
• Occasionally stands, walks and moves around the workspace.
• Lifting, carrying or pulling is not a significant requirement.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using a computer for report writing and when hand writing. Repetitive movements however, are not a significant component of the job.
• There is frequent use of hand-held objects and equipment including computers, writing tools, reference materials, tape recorders, video cameras and office machines such as telephones, printers, scanners and faxes.
• Driving is not a significant component of the job.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive and counselling, verbal and written communication, interpersonal, administration, assessment, research, information gathering, analysis and evaluation, report writing, organisational, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
• Registration may be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement.
