• Researches statutes and previous court decisions relevant to cases; conducts trials and hearings; hears and evaluates arguments and evidence in civil and criminal summary matters; decides penalties and sentences within statutory limits, such as fines, bonds and detention, awarding damages in civil matters, and issuing court orders; exercises arbitral powers if resolution is not achieved or seems improbable through conciliation; advises government of legal, constitutional and parliamentary matters and drafts bills and attends committee meetings during consideration of bills; advises agents on legal and technical matters.

• Works indoors in a court office or courtroom environment.

• Travel will be required to preside at court proceedings in other venues.

• Works in adequately heated, lit, ventilated and clean, well maintained office workspaces.

• Sedentary physical demand.

• Sits in courtrooms and offices frequently.

• Occasionally stands, walks and moves around in court, chambers and surrounding offices.

• Lifting, carrying or pulling is not a significant requirement.

• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using a computer or writing.

• There is frequent use of tools, material and equipment including writing materials, dictaphones, court and legal files, reference books and on-line information.

• Occasional driving in cars and flying in planes may be required.

• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with legal, research, interpretation, analytical, evaluation, presentation, communication, interpersonal, writing, organisational, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
