A telehealth nurse conducts patient assessment, education, crisis intervention, counselling, and triage over the telephone or other forms of interactive media.

Provide on the phone/audio visual consultations; be able to ask appropriate questions to understand presenting health issues without seeing the patient in person; refers to protocols, standards, and guidelines in arriving at decisions; assess patient needs; diagnose and treat illnesses; facilitate prescription of medications or sourcing of non-prescription health remedies; provide preventative care; educate patients on health maintenance and disease prevention; provide advice and guidance to families and other healthcare providers; help patients manage chronic conditions such as diabetes and asthma; maintain records and document patient care; refer patients to medical generalists or specialists; keep up-to-date with developments in the nursing profession.

• Works indoors in office environments.
• Works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated, and clean, well-maintained, and hygienic workspaces.

• Sedentary physical demand.
• Sits constantly during patient consultations, when writing patient notes, letters, or reports, and at staff meetings.
• Standing and walking will be occasional.
• Lifting is not required.
• Bending, squatting, crouching, stretching, twisting, and reaching is not required.
• Frequent contact with body fluid and materials is not required.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with nursing, observation, evaluation, assessment, communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem-solving, computer literacy, and decision-making capabilities, and empathy.

• A relevant tertiary qualification, Registration, and a current Annual Practising Certificate is required (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
• In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
• Frequently works shifts.
