Provides nursing care to children from birth to school age and their families with an emphasis on the prevention, early detection of, and early intervention in, physical, emotional and social problems affecting children and their families such as assistance with parentcraft, immunisation and developmental milestones.

Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care for patients according to accepted nursing practice and standards; works in consultation with other health professionals and members of health teams, and co-ordinating the care of patients; provides interventions, treatments and therapies such as medications, and monitors responses to treatment and care plans; promotes health and assists in preventing ill health by participating in health education and other health promotion activities; answers questions and providing information to patients and families about treatment and care; supervises and co-ordinating the work of enrolled nurses and other health care workers.

• Work indoors with children and their families in homes, Plunket clinics and other related community facilities.
• Generally works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained and hygienic workspaces that may vary depending on the setting, i.e. family homes.

• Light to medium physical demand.
• Sits during consultations and discussions with parents, care givers and young babies and children and when writing patient notes.
• Stands and walks frequently to monitor and examine patients and gather and use equipment, medications and other medical interventions.
• There is an occasional requirement for lifting within a light to medium range when lifting babies and young children.
• Occasional bending, squatting, crouching, stretching, twisting and reaching may be required when carrying out nursing procedures.
• Frequent contact with body fluid and materials will require the use of protective clothing and gloves to be used and safety procedures adhered to.
• Frequent driving will be required when working in the community and making home visits.
• Occasional repetitive hand and finger movements are necessary.
• There is frequent use of surgical and medical equipment and materials including medicines, medical instruments, weight and height measuring equipment, hearing and vision testing equipment, blood pressure and temperature taking equipment, medical dressings and sterilising equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with nursing, observation, evaluation and assessment of baby and maternal health, communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification. Registration and a current Annual Practising Certificate is required (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
• In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
