Manages a health service unit or sub-unit of a hospital, aged care or community health care facility, supervises nursing staff and financial resources to enable the provision of safe, cost effective nursing care within a specified field or for a particular unit, and monitors quality, clinical standards and professional development of nurses.

Develops, implements and monitors policies and objectives of nursing care as they apply to units, staff and community groups; co-ordinates the allocation of human and material resources for a health service unit such as recruitment of staff, human resource management, preparation of budgets and fiscal management; monitors and controls the performance of nurses and support staff within the unit, and provides leadership; initiates studies to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing services in the unit in relation to objectives, costs and nursing care; promotes working relationships with community agencies and health and education providers; contributes to organisational objectives in relation to quality, safety and risk management.

• Works indoors in offices and administration areas in public and private hospitals.
• Works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained workspaces.

• Sedentary to light physical demand.
• Sits at office desks, meetings or when carrying out administrative tasks.
• Stands and walks frequently around the office and wider hospital premises.
• Occasional requirement for lifting within a light physical demand.
• Repetitive hand and arm movements are required when using computers.
• There is frequent use of office machines, including telephones, faxes, computers and printers.
• Occasional driving of cars may be required but this is not a significant requirement of the job.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with nursing, financial, administrative, planning, communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1) and at least five years relevant experience.
• Registration or licensing is required.
