A doctor who specialises in the practice of medicine in relation to genetics and family traits.

Reviews patients' medical history information; conducts examinations and questions patients to determine the nature of disorders and illnesses; records patients' medical information; orders diagnostic procedures/tests and interprets findings to assist in diagnosis; diagnoses genetic conditions and advises patients and their families of the impacts these conditions could have; may advise of medical treatment or therapies or counselling/support options; refers patients to, and exchanges medical information with, specialist and general medical practitioners.

• Works indoors in consulting rooms.
• Unlikely to work outdoors.
• Works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained, and hygienic workspaces.

• Sedentary to light demand.
• Frequently sits during consultations, and when writing patient notes and letters of referral or to patients.
• Stands and walks frequently to gather equipment and examine patients.
• There is an occasional requirement for lifting, pulling, and carrying generally within a light physical demand.
• Occasional bending, squatting, crouching, or stretching and reaching may be required when examining patients.
• There are occasional repetitive hand and finger movements when using a computer or hand writing.
• There is frequent use of medical equipment, e.g. stethoscopes.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with medical, assessment, diagnostic, verbal and written communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1; Level 10 NZQA). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
• Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
