Medical Advisors consult and provide advice relating to medical issues specific to the organisation for which they work.

Work as part of a supportive team in promoting collaborative and effective interdisciplinary relationships throughout an organisation; review and analyse case files as requested; provide advice on how medical issues relating to various cases should be managed; contribute to the development of policies and procedures relating to medical issues; assist with shaping the strategic direction of the organisation for which they work; present information to internal and external stakeholders; assist with the management of risk related to medical issues; facilitate learning from normal work, adverse events, and incidents, to enable processes, models of care, and quality of delivery, to be improved.

• Works indoors in offices but on occasion may visit sites.
• Works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained and hygienic workspaces.

• Sedentary to light physical demand.
• Sits during consultations, reading of case notes, and preparation of written advice.
• Standing for long periods of time is not typically required.
• Walking for long periods of time is not a significant requirement.
• Lifting, stretching, reaching, bending, squatting, and crouching is not a significant requirement.
• Frequent repetitive hand and finger movements may be required when using a computer or writing.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with medical, assessment, diagnostic, communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem solving, and decision-making capabilities.

A medical degree and current registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
