Provides diagnostic medical services, and manages patients with acute and urgent illness and injury.

• Examines patients for injuries, diseases and disorders and carries out a range of specialist tests and procedures; may administer drugs as required; arranges patients admissions.

• Works indoors in hospital accident and emergency departments and in emergency clinics.
• Works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained and hygienic workspaces with special lighting and equipment.

• Sedentary to medium physical demand.
• May sit occasionally during; consultations, reading of case notes and writing of patient notes and reports.
• Stands and walks for long periods of time to conduct emergency medical procedures, examinations, consultations and to move between patients.
• Occasional lifting, stretching, reaching, bending, squatting and crouching may be required when moving patients from gurneys to beds and when carrying out certain medical procedures.
• Occasional repetitive hand and finger movements may be required in some medical procedures and when using a computer or writing.
• Employees frequently use surgical and medical equipment and materials including medicines, examination tables, monitoring screens, medical dressings, surgical equipment, instruments, sterilising materials and other medical equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with medical, surgical, assessment, diagnostic, communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
• Registration or licensing is required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
