Investigates, diagnoses and treats diseases of the human heart.

• Examines patients to determine the nature and extent of problems after referral from general medical practitioners and other medical specialists, and undertakes laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures; analyses test results and other medical information to make diagnoses; prescribes and administers drugs, and remedial and therapeutic treatment and procedures; records medical information and data; reports specified contagious and notifiable diseases to government health and immigration authorities; may admit or refer patients to hospitals; may consult other medical specialists.

• Works indoors in consulting rooms, clinics and offices within public or private hospitals, private medical centres and specialist clinics.
• Works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained and hygienic workspaces.

• Sedentary to light physical demand.
• Frequently sits during consultations, discussions with patients and when reading medical reports, tests, patient case notes and writing patient notes and letters.
• Stands and walks around workspaces to gather equipment, read medical images and physically examine patients or conduct surgical procedures.
• Lifting, stretching and reaching and bending, squatting or crouching is not a significant requirement of the job.
• Occasional repetitive hand and finger movements may be required for some medical procedures and when using a computer or hand writing.
• Driving is not a significant feature of the job.
• Employees frequently use medical equipment and materials including operating tables, computers, monitoring screens, medical dressings, surgical equipment, instruments, surgical clothing, stethoscopes and sterilising materials etc.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with medical, surgical, assessment, diagnostic, communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
• Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement.
