Diagnoses, assesses and treats patients in accordance with Tikanga Māori (Māori culture and custom) and with the participation of whānau (family).

Assesses patients to determine the nature of the disorder, illness, problem or need by questioning, examining and observing; develops and implements treatment plans using Maori culture and customs; evaluates and documents patients' progress through treatment plans; provides dietary and lifestyle advice and guidelines.

• Works indoors in specialist clinics, family homes or building of cultural significance. May work outdoors if therapy requires it.
• Generally works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean and well maintained workspaces.

• Sedentary to light physical demand.
• Sits during consultations and when writing patient notes. Frequently stands and walks when administering therapy, examining patients, checking case notes and to gather equipment.
• Lifting, stretching and reaching is not a significant component of the job but may be required for some procedures or when undertaking physical examinations.
• Repetitive hand and finger movements may be required when performing certain therapies.
• Contact with water and/or skin irritants is rare.
• Driving may be required but is not a significant component of the job.
• Mental skills necessary include tikanga, medical, nervous system and musculoskeletal knowledge; diagnostic; communication; interpersonal; organisational; problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required. Iwi mandate may be necessary.
