Undertakes research, testing and analysis related to the development, production, storage, quality control and distribution of drugs and related supplies.

• Conducts research to develop and improve pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and related chemical products; confers with chemists, engineering professionals and other professionals about manufacturing techniques and ingredients; tests and analyses drugs to determine their identity, purity and strength in relation to specified standards; develops standards for drugs used in pharmaceuticals.

• Works indoors in laboratories and offices connected to public or private health research facilities, universities, chemical and engineering facilities and crown research institutes

• Works in adequately heated, ventilated, clean, well maintained, lit and sterileworkspaces.

• Occasional contact with hazardous chemicals and medicines is possible and therefore at times gloves and other protective equipment will need to be used along with adherence to safety and security procedures.

• Sedentary to light physical demand.

• Sits when analysing and testing compounds.

• Frequently stands and walks within work areas to attend meetings, gather equipment and materials

• Occasional stretching, reaching, bending movements and light lifting, pulling or carrying may be required when setting up testing equipment or collecting samples.

• Occasional repetitive hand and arm movements are required when operating lab equipment such as microscopes and computers.

• There is frequent use and operation of equipment including a range of hand held lab equipment, recording instruments, computers and occasional use of general office equipment including telephones and faxes.

• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning including preparation of medications to prescribed formulas, research, observation, attention to detail, practical, communication and organisational skills.

• A relevant tertiary qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

• Registration is required.
