Teaches classes in English to students whose first language is not English.

Assesses the extent of language difficulties in students for whom English is a second language; teaches students individually and in small groups out of the regular classroom, and assists students within normal classroom settings; teaches students English language skills using a variety of methods; provides assistance to other classroom teachers by designing special teaching programmes for students with difficulties with English; designs and produces teaching materials and adapts existing materials; prepares course outlines and goals; assigns lessons, corrects homework, and prepares and grades exams; analyses, records and reports progress to regular classroom teachers, parents and students.

• Works indoors in offices and teaching rooms within English for Speakers of Other Languages Schools in the private sector, primary, intermediate or secondary schools, tertiary institutes or government funded migrant classes.
• Occasionally works outdoors to provide a range of teaching and learning modules.
• Works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained workspaces.

• Sedentary work.
• Sits in offices and teaching rooms interacting with teaching, ancillary staff and students.
• Stands and walks around the premises.
• The requirement for lifting, carrying or pulling is not significant.
• Bending, squatting or crouching is not a significant requirement.
• Stretching and twisting is not a significant requirement.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using computers and writing.
• Occasional driving may be required if teaching across multiple campuses or when supervising fieldtrips. Driving is however, not a significant component of the job.
• There is occasional to frequent use of teaching equipment including whiteboards, overhead projectors, tape recorders, videos and other AV equipment, computers, textbooks and a wide array of equipment specific to teaching area(s) including games, posters and books.
• Mental skills necessary include English language knowledge, ESOL teaching, writing, presentation, research, organisational, administrative, assessment, evaluation, computing, communication, interpersonal and problem solving capabilities.

To become a teacher of English as a second language in a primary school, secondary school or post-secondary training establishment a postgraduate qualification in teaching English as a second language is required (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). To train as an English Foreign Language (EFL) teacher with a view to teaching foreign students, it is recommended that teachers complete a recognised qualification such as the Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching for Adults (CELTA).
