Assists students (child or adult) to improve their reading, and/or writing, and/or numeracy skills and abilities, ideally to reach age-level or workplace expectations, or to gain NZQF (or similar) qualifications.

Plans and delivers engaging and effective lessons, in person or online, in literacy and/or numeracy for students referred as needing remedial tuition or extra or specialist support; provides individual and small group instruction to meet the diverse needs of students; assesses and monitors student progress and uses assessment data to inform instruction and support individual student needs; collaborates with colleagues, parents, and other stakeholders to support student learning and progress; creates a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel motivated and confident in their ability to learn; may complete marketing, tutorial booking, and invoicing administration and keep small business account records; stays up-to-date with best practices in teaching literacy and numeracy, and in the tutoring of students with specific learning disorders.

• Works indoors in offices and teaching spaces within private training facilities, or in private homes.
• Normally works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated, and clean, well-maintained workspaces.

• Sedentary to light physical work. Frequently sits in offices and teaching spaces when teaching, preparing teaching materials, completing administration tasks, marking assignments, or in discussion with students, parents, other stakeholders, and colleagues.
• Stands and walks frequently around the teaching spaces to teach, monitor, and interact with students, and to provide individual guidance and support.
• Stretching and twisting movements are not a significant part of this job.
• Frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when writing or using computers.
• Driving will be required if tutoring occurs in clients’ homes.
• Skills and knowledge necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning and teaching, communication, interpersonal, creativity, programme development, assessment, organisational, administrative, computer literacy, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-job training may be required.
• Some employers/roles will require a Police background check in advance of employment, and compliance with other relevant aspects of the Children’s Act 2014.
• Roles which involve some driving will require a minimum of a Class 1(R) Driver Licence.
