Teaches students in the practice, theory and performance of dance.

• Plans programmes of study for individual students and groups; prepares and presents material on the theory of the subject area; instructs and demonstrates practical aspects of the subject area; assigns problems and exercises relative to students' training needs and talents; assesses students and offers advice, criticism and encouragement; revises curricula, course content, course materials and methods of instruction; prepares students for examinations, performances and assessments; keep abreast of developments in the subject area by attending professional conferences, seminars and courses, reading current literature, and talking with colleagues; may arrange visits and tours to professional exhibitions and performances; may organise exhibitions or performances of students' work.

• Works indoors in offices and teaching spaces and dance studios within private training facilities and homes.
• Works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained workspaces.
• Learning spaces may be noisy.

• Sedentary to medium physical demand levels.
• Frequently sits in offices when preparing teaching materials, completing administration tasks, marking assignments or in discussion with students and/or parents.
• Stands and walks frequently around the teaching spaces to teach the class, demonstrate, monitor and interact with students and to provide individual guidance and support.
• Occasional bending, squatting or crouching may be required when teaching certain practical elements of dance.
• Occasional stretching and twisting may be required when teaching certain practical elements of dance.
• Lifting, pulling or carrying is not a significant component of the job.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using writing instruments and computers to carry out administration tasks and prepare theoretical lessons, also when demonstrating dance elements.
• Frequent use of office and educational learning equipment/materials including books on methodology, stereos, computers, telephones, photocopiers and printers.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning and teaching, behaviour management and supervision, communication, interpersonal, creativity, programme development, organisational, administrative, computing, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement.
