Analyses and advises on the design, implementation and modification of government or commercial environmental operations and programmes.

• Carries out environmental impact assessments for a wide range of development projects; proposes solutions to address negative environmental impacts of a development project; studies the effects of factors, such as terrain, altitude, climatic and environmental change, sources of nutrition, predators and the impacts of humans, on animal and plant life; studies and analyses pollution, atmospheric conditions, demographic characteristics, ecology, mineral, soil and water samples; develops conservation and management policies for biological resources, such as fish populations and forests, and establishing standards and developing approaches for the control of pollution and the rehabilitation of areas disturbed by activities such as mining, timber felling and overgrazing; participates in management planning by providing environmental information and making inventories of plants, animals and items of cultural and heritage significance.

• Frequently works indoors in offices of crown research institutions, universities, regional and city councils and companies in the private and/or public sector.
• Works outdoors and travels by vehicle, watercraft or foot to areas of interest and/or concern.
• Works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained workspaceswhen indoors.
• Work outdoors may require the use of protective clothing and footwear.
• Employees rarely need to work in all weather conditions.

• Light to medium physical demand, with occasional sitting in offices, meetings or vehicles.
• Stands and walks frequently to inspect areas of concern or interest.
• Occasional requirement for lifting, carrying or pulling may be required.
• Occasional bending, squatting or crouching and stretching, twisting and climbing may be required during site investigations.
• Repetitive hand and finger movements are likely on a frequent basis due to the use of computers and writing instruments.
• Driving of cars and/or utility vehicles may be required occasionally.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, organisational, analysis, decision-making and problem solving capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
