• Designs mechanical equipment, machines, components, products for manufacture, and plant and systems for construction; develops specifications for manufacture, and determines materials, equipment, piping, material flows, capacities and layout of plant and systems; organises and managing project labour and the delivery of materials, plant and equipment; establishes standards and policies for installation, modification, quality control, testing, inspection and maintenance according to engineering principles and safety regulations; inspects plant to ensure optimum performance is maintained; directs the maintenance of plant buildings and equipment, and coordinating the requirements for new designs, surveys and maintenance schedules.

• Frequently work indoors in engineering workshops, factories and offices as part of private companies or professional engineering consultant firms.

• Frequently work outdoors to inspect sites and have discussions with clients, contractors and affected parties.

• Frequent travel may be necessary.

• Works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained workspaces.

• May need to work occasionally in all weathers on worksites.

• Worksites may be noisy and dirty.

• Light to medium physical demand. Frequently sits in offices, in meetings or at computer work stations.

• Stands and walks frequently in offices and on-site where the terrain may be difficult/uneven.

• Occasional requirement for lifting, carrying or pulling to medium physical demand.

• Occasional bending, squatting or crouching and stretching, twisting, climbing may be required on sites to carry out inspections and/or complete work.

• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using hand tools and equipment including drawing and writing instruments, electronic measuring equipment, calculators and computers.

• Uses plans, manuals and safety clothing/equipment on-site.

• Occasional to frequent driving of vehicles is likely to visit sites and client offices.

• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with design, drawing, planning, analytical, engineering, computing, communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem solving, and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some cases particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.

• Registration may be required.
