Researches and designs heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Communicate to understand requirements, goals, design specifications and evaluate cost, feasibility and implementation process; create and submit costings and timelines; conduct field surveys; calculate loads for air handling unit, pump, fan, pipe etc; understand and ensure compliance with codes and standards for construction and design; generate as-built drawings of existing systems; create drawings for approval and cost estimates; work with other engineers, project managers and construction professionals, as needed, to create and/or modify design parameters; develop and oversee all aspects of product selection (or manufacture) including clean room design, computer modelling, fabrication, testing and implementation of systems; analyse systems to find inefficiencies or malfunctions and create solutions to optimise performance; design testing procedures and control equipment to identify necessary modifications; inspect installation and issue certification.

• Frequently work indoors in offices and/or engineering workshops as part of private companies or professional HVAC engineering consultant firms.
• Occasional to frequent travel may be necessary.
• Works in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained workspaces when conducting meetings, undertaking design, research and administrative work but, on site, there is likely to be no heating and ventilation.
• Working in all weathers is not a significant requirement of this job.
• Worksites visited may be noisy and dirty.

• Sedentary to light physical demand.
• Terrain may be difficult/uneven when visiting on-site.
• Lifting, carrying or pulling is not a significant requirement of a design role.
• Occasional bending, squatting or crouching and stretching, twisting, climbing may be required when at sites, to conduct inspections and/or perform diagnostic work.
• Frequent to constant repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using drawing and writing instruments, measuring equipment, calculators and computers.
• Uses safety clothing/equipment on-site.
• Occasional to frequent driving is likely to be necessary to visit sites and client offices.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with design, drawing, planning, analytical, HVAC engineering, computing, communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem solving, and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some cases particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
• Registration may be required.
