Designs and prepares specifications for chemical process systems and the construction and operation of commercial-scale chemical plants, and supervises industrial processing and fabrication of products undergoing physical and chemical changes.

• Prepares designs for chemical process systems and plans control systems for processes such as those used to remove and separate components, effect chemical changes, test and evaluate fuels, transfer heat, and control the storing and handling of solids, liquids and gases; monitors the operation and maintenance of equipment to achieve maximum efficiency under safe operating conditions; ensures correct materials and equipment are used and that they conform to specifications; diagnoses malfunctions in chemical plants and instituting remedial action; studies product utilisation and pollution control problems.

• Works indoors in offices and laboratories within industrial, manufacturing and other work sites.
• Occasionally works outdoors and occasionally in all weather conditions when on-site inspections or when meeting with clients and/or contractors.
• Works in adequately heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained workspaces.
• Will come into contact with potential skin irritants and will need to wear protective clothing.

• Sedentary to light physical demand.
• Frequently sits, stands and walks in office and laboratory area and outdoors when on-site.
• Occasional lifting, carrying or pulling within light physical range.
• Bending, squatting or crouching and stretching, twisting, climbing is not a significant component of the job.
• Occasional contact with skin irritants and/or water may occur, however protective clothing should be used.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using hand tools and equipment including pens, calculators, keyboards, mice and a range of laboratory and testing equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with design, biotechnical, computing, report writing, communication, interpersonal, planning, organisational, problem solving and decision-making capabilities.

• A relevant tertiary qualification or at least five years applicable experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
• Registration may be required.
