Plans, designs, details and supervises the construction of commercial, industrial, retail and residential building interiors to produce an environment tailored to a purpose, with particular emphasis on space creation, space planning, and factors that enhance living and working environments.

• Determines the objectives and constraints of the design brief by consulting with clients and stakeholders; researches and analyses spatial, functional, efficiency, safety and aesthetic requirements; formulates design concepts for building interiors; prepares sketches, diagrams, illustrations and plans to communicate design concepts; negotiates design solutions with clients, management, suppliers and construction staff; selects, specifies and recommends functional and aesthetic materials, furniture and products for interiors; details and documents selected design for construction; supervises the construction of interiors.

• Works indoors in interior design studios or workrooms and client homes and offices.

• Usually works in adequately heated and ventilated work spaces. On-site locations may vary however.

• Light to medium physical demand levels.
• Frequently sits either at computers or drawing boards.
• Will occasionally stand and walkabout the studio or work areas to gather required tools, sample materials and equipment and when on-site with clients.
• Occasional stretching up and reaching across and bending over samples, drawings, models and when carrying out on-site inspections. Squatting, crouching and kneeling may occur occasionally when comparing flooring samples or carrying out inspection work.
• Twisting of the body or neck, and contact with skin irritants or water may be required but are not a significant feature of the job.
• Lifting, carrying and holding requirements will be necessary but are unlikely to exceed an occasional medium physical demand level.
• Repetitive movement of the hands is likely to be required when using computers or drawing and writing instruments.
• Driving is likely to be required on an occasional to frequent basis when visiting client work-sites.
• Use of hand-held objects and equipment will be frequent and may include sketching, drawing, design tools and drawing boards, cameras and computers with specialised design software, as well as extensive sample booklets and colour charts.
• Mental skills necessary include design, drawing, creative, technical/mathematical, problem solving and communication skills. Employees also need to have some knowledge of computer-aided design processes and a sense of colour and design.

• A relevant NZQF Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2).
• At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
